Demand for Nurses Rises in Indiana
Posted Tuesday, January 29, 2008
Nursing jobs are hot across Indiana, according a report from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. The field is expected to experience 30 percent growth through 2014, creating 15,000 jobs, a report from the school said. Nurses are anticipated to be the highest in-demand profession in seven of Indiana's 11 regions.
Researchers with the Indiana Business Research Center, based at the Kelley School, analyzed data from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
Postsecondary teachers will be needed even more than nurses in some counties, including Monroe, Owen, Greene and Lawrence.
"Aside from registered nurse, the only other job to rank first in any of the regions was postsecondary teacher, which topped the list in four regions that have a state university as a major employer," IBRC geodemographic analyst Rachel Justis wrote in the report.
In addition to predicted growth for teachers in the Bloomington area, similar trends are expected near West Lafayette, Muncie and Terre Haute. But the nursing field will be even more wide open.
"In the coming years, the opportunity for RNs to find work in Indiana will abound," Justis wrote.
Registered nurses made an average salary of $51,796 in 2006, according to the report data.
